“Miss Lewin.” She turned. Shea Corey had walked up behind her. He had short light brown hair, and playful blue eyes. “I thought that was you.” “Mr. Corey, have we met before?” “No, your reputation precedes you. So what are you after in my little collection?” Reaching over, he hit a button next to the door. The security guards ushered everyone else out, then shut and locked the doors. Taken off-guard, she looked at him for a moment. She might as well be semi-truthful. “The Amulet of Akivia. My brother said you had it and I wanted to see it. Is that a crime?” “No.” He took her hand, leading her toward a glass case. He chuckled, then stopped, pointing down to the necklace. “There it is.” It looked just like the picture, a bit tarnished, but intact. Reaching down, she traced the amulet through the glass. “It’s beautiful.” Was it her imagination or was the necklace glowing? No. It had to be the light. “Hmm, would you like to try it on?” “Really? Aren’t you afraid I’ll steal it?” He shook his head, and Riley wasn’t at all sure she liked the smug look on his face. Taking a set of keys from his pocket, he unlocked the case and carefully removed the amulet. His fingers brushed the skin of her neck as he put it on her. He said something under his breath, but she couldn’t make it out. Suddenly the room filled with blue and silver light. She felt dizzy, then everything went black and she was falling. * * * * Alex couldn’t believe her ears. Fearghas had escaped and she was getting chastised. “You should’ve killed him, or at least stayed to make sure the peasants did the job for you.” She glared at the head of the Draconi. “I’m not sure if you get that I didn’t know what to do with your tyrant as I was new to the whole saving the world thing. Why didn’t we get this news earlier?” “The passes weren’t clear.” “Great.” Alex began pacing. “So he has a six month head start and is in hiding?” “The Katha are protecting him.” She bit her lip, walking to the window. “So what do we do now?” “I’ve sent a patrol to find out what’s happening. When they report back, then the council will make a decision. You should continue with your training.” Alex moved to the door. “You will tell me what you find out?” “Of course.” * * * * Bria looked up as Alex stormed into the room they shared at the tower. “That bastard Argi is yanking me around!” “What’d he do now?” “Fearghas escaped and it’s my fault.” Alex began pacing in front of the small fireplace in the room. Rayne, Alex's dragon companion, watched from the mantel as she moved back and forth. “No. You did what you thought was right.” “I did what would keep his blood off my hands,” Alex snapped. With a sigh, she sank down on the bed. “Some savior I turned out to be.” |
